What is Zakat al-Mal?زَكَاةُ الْمَال

Zakat al-Mal is one of the five pillars of Islam and a religious obligation for every Muslim who possesses wealth above the Nisab for a complete lunar year (hawl).

Third Pillar

Zakat occupies the third place among the five pillars of Islam, after the Shahada and Salat.

2.5% of wealth

2.5% of net wealth that exceeds the Nisab and has been in your possession for one lunar year is paid.

One lunar year (hawl)

Your wealth must have remained above the Nisab for the last 12 lunar months.

8 categories of beneficiaries

The Quran (9:60) designates to whom Zakat belongs, ensuring its fair distribution.

Zakat in the Quran and Sunnah

Allah says in the Quran (2:43): "Establish prayer, pay Zakat, and bow down with those who bow." Zakat is mentioned more than 30 times in the Quran, always alongside Salat.

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: "Islam is built upon five pillars… giving Zakat." (Bukhari and Muslim). Paying Zakat purifies the soul from attachment to material possessions and brings barakah to those who fulfill it.

How is Zakat calculated?كَيْفَ تُحْسَبُ الزَّكَاة

Follow these four steps to accurately calculate the Zakat you must pay.

1

Add up your zakatable wealth

Include: gold and silver (market value), cash, bank balance, business merchandise, investments, and debts owed to you that you expect to collect.

2

Subtract your immediate debts

Deduct debts you must pay in the next year: loans, outstanding bills, current month's mortgage. Do not subtract long-term debts in their entirety.

3

Compare the result with the Nisab

The Nisab in 2025 is equivalent to 85 g of gold (~€7,225) or 595 g of silver (~€600). If your net wealth exceeds this value, you owe Zakat.

4

Apply 2.5% to the total

Multiply the net zakatable wealth by 0.025 (2.5%). The result is your Zakat for the year. Use our calculator to do it in seconds.
